Chinese, Uzbek presidents sign joint statement to boost economic ties, fight terrorism

TASHKENT, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu
Jintao and his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov have signed a joint
statement to boost bilateral economic cooperation and make more
coordinated effort to fight terrorism.
According to the joint statement signed by Hu and Karimov after
their talks in Tashkent on Wednesday, China and Uzbekistan "will
continue to push forward bilateral economic and trade cooperation
and jointly take measures to further improve their trading
structure and increase the two-way trade volume."

China urges South Africa to protect Chinese citizen's safety after journalists robbed

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday urged South
Africa to take measures to protect Chinese citizen's property and
personal safety.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the remarks
after several Chinese journalists in South Africa to cover the
FIFA World Cup were robbed.
"We are concerned about this accident and hope South African
authorities will properly deal with it in accordance with the law,
" Qin said.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned Chinese citizens who

Middle East Wu Sike said Thursday that China is keen to find a
peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic ways.

HK Customs seizes computer hard disks worth 0.77 mln HKD

HONG KONG, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Customs officers
Thursday conducted an anti-smuggling operation codenamed "
Chainrunner" against speedboat smuggling activities in Sai Kung,
the New Territories and seized a batch of computer hard disks
worth about 0.77 million HK dollars and a light goods vehicle.
Based on intelligence analysis, officers of the Customs' Marine
Enforcement Group kept surveillance on smuggling activities in Sai
Kung and conducted a raid in the waters off Pak Sha Wan, Sai Kung,
in the early morning on Thursday.

25 S.Korean top military officials face disciplinary action for Cheonan incident

SEOUL, June 10 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's Board of Audit and
Inspection (BAI) on Thursday said it has asked the Ministry of
Defense to discipline 25 military officials for their failing to
properly handle the sinking of the warship Cheonan.
The South Korean national audit agency said in an interim
investigation report that the probe confirmed problems in the
military authorities and Defense Ministry's combat prevention and
preparedness, reporting structures, crisis response systems and
management of military secrets.

China again calls for restraint, calm over ROK warship sinking

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called for calm
and restraint so as to avoid further escalation of tension over
the sinking of a Republic of Korea (ROK) warship.
"China has always been firmly committed to safeguarding peace
and stability of the Korean Peninsula and has consistently held
this position," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a
regular news briefing.
"We also hope that the parties concerned understand (China's
stance) and work with China to properly deal with the Cheonan
incident," said Qin.
