Chinese mainland, Taiwan to hold third expert-level talks on economic pact

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan
have decided to hold their third round of expert-level talks on
Sunday, to pave the way for a long-awaited economic and trade pact
that is expected to boost cross-Strait trade.
Experts from both sides will discuss the framework and the
clauses of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA),
said a statement from the mainland's Association for Relations
Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Thursday.
The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties
and bring the two economies closer.

US, allies welcome new Iran sanctions while Iran, Brazil reject

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States and its allies
on Wednesday welcomed the latest round of UN sanctions against
Iran, while Iran and Brazil slammed the new measures as "not worth
a dime" and "a mistake."
The UN Security Council passed a new round of sanctions on Iran
for its controversial nuclear program Wednesday, with 12 members
voting in favor and Lebanon abstaining. Brazil and Turkey, which
helped negotiate a nuclear fuel swap plan in hope of avoiding
sanctions, voted against the UN resolution.

China demands thorough investigation, severe punishment after deadly shooting on China-DPRK border

SHENYANG, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China has demanded the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to "severely punish" its border
guards who shot dead three Chinese nationals and wounded another
last week, Chinese authorities said Thursday.
The incident took place in early morning of June 4 when some
residents of Dandong City in northeast China's Liaoning Province,
who were suspected of crossing the border for trade activities,
were shot by DPRK border guards, the Liaoning provincial
government said in a statement faxed to Xinhua.

Japan's ex-premier to attend Shanghai Expo: top gov't spokesman

TOKYO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio
Hatoyama, who resigned from the top post on June 2, will go to
China at the weekend to attend the Shanghai Expo, Chief Cabinet
Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Thursday.
At a press conference, Sengoku said that the former premier's
three-day visit to Shanghai is to attend the "Japan Day" events
scheduled for Saturday.
"With the envoy's (Hatoyama) visit, we are hoping that friendly

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias agreed here Wednesday to
continuously advance relations of the two nations.

Wednesday started a state visit to Uzbekistan, where he will also
