Chinese shares open higher Wednesday

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities opened higher
Wednesday, as the country's securities regulator announced to
widen margin trading ambit Tuesday.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.4 percent to
open at 2,523.88 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index advanced 0.48 percent to 10,086.77
points at the opening.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission said on Tuesday it
had approved letting five additional securities companies to carry
out pilot margin trading, as current business is operating

Japan's core machinery orders rise 4 pct in April on month

TOKYO, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Japan's core machinery orders rose a
seasonally adjusted 4.0 percent in April from a month earlier, the
Cabinet Office said in a report Wednesday.
Machinery orders in April, seen as a key gauge for capital
spending and therefore an important economic indicator, beat
economists' median forecast of a 1.0 percent increase and followed
a 5.4 percent rise in March.
Analysts suggest the increase in capital spending is a sign
Japan's export-driven economy is steadily recovering, however
economists highlight the fact that concerns over Europe's debt

Schwarzenegger vows to promote trade with Asia

LOS ANGELES, June 8 (Xinhua) -- California Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger pledged on Tuesday to promote trade with Asia,
particularly with China, Japan and South Korea.
The governor said he will lead a trade mission to China, Japan
and South Korea in September to promote California and bolster
trade relations.
The mission will focus on high speed rail, California products
and services, investment into California, and travel and tourism,

IMF to focus on securing stronger global economy and advancing reforms

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund
(IMF) will focus its activities for the period ahead on securing
the recovery from the global financial crisis and making progress
in its governance and mandate reforms, IMF Managing Director
Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Tuesday.
"Recent events clearly show that the global economy remains
vulnerable, and that important work remains to be done to secure
the recovery and prevent future crises," Strauss-Kahn told the IMF
's Executive Board during the discussion of the work program for
the upcoming period.

U.S. sets preliminary penalties on Chinese drill pipe

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Commerce Department
Tuesday set preliminary countervailing duties (CVD) on imports of
some 119.2 million dollar drill pipe from China, a move might
escalate trade disputes between the two countries.
The department said in a statement that it "preliminary
determined that Chinese exporters of drill pipe have received
countervailable subsidies of 15.72 percent."
As a result of this preliminary determination, Commerce will
instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash

China calls for persistent efforts in tackling environment challenges

Nations in Geneva on Wednesday called for persistent international
efforts in dealing with environment challenges such as climate
change and the shortage of energy and natural resources.

Roundup: Iran dismisses UN resolution, threatening counter measures

TEHRAN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Iranian officials opposed strongly
the latest round of UN Security Council sanctions on their country,
threatening to take measures against the move.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Wednesday said the
resolution against Iran "worth nothing", the semi-official ISNA
news agency reported.
"These resolutions worth not a dime for the Iranian nation,"
Ahmadinejad said when visiting Tajikistan.
The president compared those resolutions to used towels that
should be thrown in waste bin, saying "they cannot harm Iranians."

UN chief calls for comprehensive, negotiated political solution to Iran's nuclear issue

UNITED NATIONS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-
moon Wednesday called for comprehensive and negotiated political
solution to Iran's nuclear issue following Security Council's
approval of a fresh round of sanctions over the country's suspect
nuclear program.
"The Secretary-General has consistently stressed the importance
for Iran to fully comply with all relevant Security Council
resolutions and to cooperate fully with the International Atomic
Energy Agency to resolve all outstanding issues," said a statement
issued by Ban's spokesperson.

China stresses dialogue, negotiation for Iranian nuclear issue solution

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- A solution that satisfies all
parties' concerns through dialogue and negotiation is the right
course for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, said
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang early Thursday morning.
Qin made the remarks when commenting on a new UN resolution on
the Iranian nuclear issue, which prohibits Iran from investing
abroad in nuclear and enrichment operations and imposes binding
new restrictions on Iran's import of conventional arms.
The resolution was the fourth set of UN sanctions against Iran
