Chinese president leaves for 10th SCO summit in Uzbekistan

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left
Beijing on Wednesday for the 10th annual summit of the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) scheduled for June 10-11 in the
Uzbek capital of Tashkent.
Hu will also pay state visits to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan as
guest of Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President
Nursultan Nazarbayev respectively.
Established in 2001, the regional body SCO now groups China,
Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

VANCOUVER, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese voices are increasingly
being heard in Coquitlam, British Columbia, through the Confucius
Classroom program where 450 local residents, young and old, are
currently studying Mandarin at a conversation level.
On Tuesday in the Vancouver suburb city, the program, which is
funded by the Chinese government through the China National Office
for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban) took a major
step when it unveiled a major acquisition sure to benefit
thousands of Canadians for years to come.

Chinese vice premier leaves for four-nation visit

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang
left Beijing on Wednesday for an official visit to Pakistan, Sri
Lanka, Greece and Austria from June 9 to 21.
Zhang is visiting the four nations at the invitation of
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister of Sri
Lanka D.M. Jayaratne, Greek Deputy Prime Minister Theodores
Pangalos and Austrian Vice Chancellor Josef Proll, according to

Africa Focus: Africa keeps strong stance as ICC states enter protracted

KAMPALA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- African states have kept a strong stance on
the non-involvement of the UN Security Council in the jurisdiction of the
International Criminal Court (ICC) over the crime of aggression.
The over 100 ICC states including other non-member states like the
United States of America, Russia, and China on Tuesday, after three days
of protracted negotiations, did not reach consensus on who is to determine
that an act of aggression has been committed.
