China's "little emperors" reluctant as two-child policy takes effect

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- After his mother had another child two months ago, four-year-old Kaikai insisted his little brother be named "Duoduo," meaning "extra."
No longer the only "little emperor" of his family, Kaikai has to share his favorite toys and often wakes up from his brother's crying at night. The boy can't hide his resentment.
"I don't like him, but I can't bully him because he's my brother," Kaikai once told his parents when they found him hiding under a quilt, crying.

China, UNECE to boost PPP cooperation

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's economic planner on Wednesday announced that it has signed a deal with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) to boost
public-private-partnership (PPP) cooperation.
This is the first time an official Chinese organization has signed such a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UN.
Following the MoU, the National Development and Reform Commission will cooperate with the UNECE on PPP research, exchanges, training and practical cases.

Three dead in E. China fireworks plant blast

NANCHANG, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Three people were confirmed dead and about 60 more injured after explosions swept a rural fireworks plant in east China's Jiangxi Province early on Wednesday, according to local authorities.
Several blasts ripped through a workshop of Hongsheng fireworks factory in Kunshan village, Guangfeng district, Shangrao city starting at around
0:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The blasts damaged some nearby houses and were heard across the district. More than 1,000 residents were evacuated out of safety concerns.

CPC offers subsidies for members in need

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's organization department has allocated 80.2 million yuan (12.2 million U.S. dollars) in New Year subsidies for elderly and needy
CPC members.
The money will mainly go to members who have lost their jobs or become poor due to disability or disasters, as well as relatives of those who have lost their lives in disaster relief duties, said the department in a Wednesday statement.

Senior officials commemorate late PLA general

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A symposium was held Wednesday in Beijing to commemorate the centenary of late Chinese general Xiao Hua.
Xiao, who was born in 1916 and died in 1985, once served as a commander of the People's Liberation Army and vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee. He reached the rank of general in 1955.
The symposium was attended by Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, who also met with Xiao's relatives before the meeting.

Britain opens Consulate-General in central China

WUHAN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A new British Consulate-General in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province opened on Tuesday, according to Foreign Affairs Office of Hubei province.
The establishment of Consulate-General was approved by Chinese and British governments in 2014. Construction started in May 2015.
It is Britain's fourth Consulate-General in China following Guangzhou, Chongqing and Shanghai.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the sister city program between Wuhan and Manchester, Britain.

Afghani foreign minister to visit China

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Afghani Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani will pay an official visit to China from Jan. 25 to 28, as a guest of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei announced the visit at a regular press conference on Wednesday.
This will be Rabbani's first visit to China since he became foreign minister, and it will also be the first high-level visit between China and Afghanistan
this year.
Both countries agree that this will be a very important visit, Hong said.

End to late marriage holidays upsets young couples

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Cindy Sun and her fiance had to reconsider their honeymoon plans after they heard that a policy giving extra leave to couples choosing to marry later was set to be abolished.
Sun, 29, a civil servant in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, had planned to tie the knot in May this year.
"Although Jiangsu has yet to implement regulations to support the amended Family Planning Law, we are still worried about whether we will miss out on the 10 extra days holiday," said Sun.

Chinese railway police nab 40,315 fugitives in 2015

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The railway police in 2015 apprehended 40,315 criminals who were attempting to use the railway to avoid capture, an increase of 13.2 percent from the previous year, the police said Wednesday.
The railway police boosted patrols at ticket halls, stations, waiting rooms and onboard trains, and improved the way information on fugitives was collected and shared, according to the railway police bureau.
