Chinese scientists unravel origin, global migration of domestic dogs

KUNMING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Dogs were domesticated in southern East Asia 33,000 years ago and migrated to the rest of the world 15,000 years after, Chinese scientists said in a newly-published article.
"Using whole genome sequences from a total of 58 canids (12 gray wolves, 27 primitive dogs from Asia and Africa, and a collection of 19 diverse breeds across the world), we find that dogs from southern East Asia have significantly higher genetic diversity compared to other populations," said Wang Guodong, the first author.

ABOARD XUELONG, Antarctica, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's 32nd Antarctic expedition team on Monday confirmed an earlier speculation in the South Pole of the world's largest canyon.
The canyon, more than 1000 kilometers' long, 1500 meters deep, and 26.5 kilometers wide at the top, is larger than the Grand Canyon in the U.S. and dubbed the largest canyon discovered on earth, according to Chinese scientists.

Chinese unmanned helicopter completes South Pole flight

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- An unmanned Chinese helicopter has completed its maiden flight from the Great Wall Station in the South Pole and has photographed fauna and flora in the area.
"Polar Hawk-2," which was developed by the Beijing Normal University, can operate for about one hour at a time at an altitude of up to 1,500 meters. The lithium-battery powered aircraft is highly efficient, quiet and has low emissions, according to Cheng Xiao, head of the research team.

China to inject liquidity into banking system

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank on Tuesday announced it will inject at least 600 billion yuan (91.46 billion U.S. dollars) to provide liquidity for the impending Spring Festival holiday.
The liquidity will be added through tools such as standing lending facility (SLF), medium-term lending facility (MLF) and pledged supplementary lending (PSL), the People's Bank of China said in a statement on its website.
The central bank vowed to ensure liquidity in the banking system is "reasonable and adequate" around the Spring Festival, which will fall on Feb.

China to launch full preservation of plant species

KUNMING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China is to launch a preservation program to cover all the country's plant species, a botanist announced Tuesday.
The program, expected to last ten years and involve 94 of the nation's botanical gardens, will involve a thorough survey of existing plant species across China and catalog the findings accordingly, said Chen Jin, director of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden under the Chinese Academy

China to continue incentives for new energy vehicles

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to roll out favorable policies to encourage the construction of new energy vehicle (NEV) charging facilities in 2016-2020.
The government will reward major provinces and cities with prizes of between 90 million yuan (13.6 million U.S. dollars) and 120 million yuan that welcome more than 30,000 NEVs to their roads in 2016, said a guideline jointly released Tuesday by five administrative departments including the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission.

Chongqing 2015 GDP grows 11 pct

CHONGQING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's southwestern metropolis of Chongqing led the country in economic growth by posting an 11 percent growth of GDP in 2015, local statistics bureau announced Tuesday.
It far outpaced the country's 6.9-percent GDP growth, the slowest annual expansion in a quarter of a century.
Chongqing has maintained double-digit growth for three consecutive years. Its GDP reached 1.57 trillion yuan (239.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 2015, Zhang Fumin, deputy head of the municipal bureau of statistics, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

China growth dips, more supply-side reforms signaled

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's economy recorded the slowest annual expansion in a quarter of a century in 2015 as authorities signaled more supply-side structural reforms for long-term growth.
The economy grew 6.9 percent year on year in 2015, in line with the official target of around 7 percent for the year, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday.
Growth in the fourth quarter (Q4) came in at 6.8 percent year on year, the lowest quarterly rate since the global financial crisis, the data showed.

China's top steel maker 2015 net profit plummets

SHANGHAI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Baoshan Iron and Steel Co. (Baosteel), China's largest listed steel maker, saw a 83-percent plunge in its 2015 net profit, reflecting a general slowing in the industrial sector.
State-owned Baosteel attributed the plunge to sluggish demand, steel price declines -- which outpaced a fall in the price of raw materials -- and expanding foreign exchange losses, according to preliminary figures submitted Tuesday to Shanghai Stock Exchange, where the company is listed.
